The Trice, Greenspeed, and Windcheetah are all 'audax-proven,' in that I know they have been successfully ridden on audax events, which offer a good test of practicality and performance. ICE make undoubtedly the widest range of machines. You can mix and match wheel size, track width, and mesh or hardshell seat with current Trice. In my view, the trikes best suited to audax riding are the low, narrow models with hardshell seats.

Inspired Cycle Engineering (UK)

ICE make the Trice range of recumbent trikes, and also the X2 tandem trike. I owned a 1997 Trice, and rode the 1999 Paris-Brest-Paris on a new XL. I own a Micro, on which I've ridden two events of over 1,200 km. I can testify that build quality, practicality, comfort, value, and handling of the current machines are all irreproachable. Nice looks too

Greenspeed (Australia)

Greenspeed also make a tandem trike as well as racing and touring solo trikes. A Greenspeed tandem trike has twice completed PBP. Greenspeeds have an excellent reputation.

Windcheetah (UK)

A flashy site for a flashy machine, the latest version of Mike Burrows' classic design. Joystick steering (an acquired taste for some), lightweight, fairings available. Buy one and you can pretend you're Andy Wilkinson.

Optima (NL)

The Optima Rider is a 406/559 Trike with solid seat and rear suspension, and comparatively cheap.

Hotmover (Australia/NZ)

An all-406, fairly low trike. Uses rim brakes on the front wheels. Not too expensive

TerraTrike (USA)

Relatively inexpensive, it seems.

Trisled (Australia)

Yet another trike maker from Oz... The range includes the Sorcerer, a velomobile.

MR Recumbents (Australia)

Used successfully by Peter Weiss on PBP and Ian Humphries on Edinburgh-London. Not the world's best-looking machines, to my eyes, but light and robust.

Leitra (Denmark)

A velomobile trike, with windscreen wiper!

Quest (NL)

More velomobiles...

There are links to UK and US Trice dealers on the ICE website. You can order a Trice direct in the UK, but you have to go via a dealer in the US. Most dealers are happy to offer test rides. Try before you buy! Trikes are very diverse

Westcountry Recumbents

Rob Hague, based formerly near Taunton but now confusingly in East Yorkshire, is now a dealer for Greenspeed and an enthusiastic trikie. He supplied the Trice XL I rode on PBP

A good way of tapping into collective wisdom (and occasionally collective unreason) about trikes is to subscribe to the trikes mailing list

The International Human Powered Vehicle Association site has lots of information and links about trikes and two-wheel recumbents. You'll find the archives of the trikes mailing list there
